Structure of Concentrated HCl Solutions
نویسنده
چکیده
A pentagonal ring is suggested as the basic structural unit of HCl(H2O)6 and (HCl)2(H2O)6 in solution. Modeled after the X-ray structure of a caged H13O6 compound, it contains bridged H5O2 and Clions, each with a coordination number around four. In the most concentrated HCl solutions, one of the ligands solvating Clis HCl, giving rise to a bichloride moiety. The proposed structure explains qualitatively the stoichiometry, ion mobility, (IR, Raman) spectroscopy and (X-ray, neutron) diffraction data of concentrated HCl solutions and provides a semiquantitative fit to the X-ray radial distribution function. The ring structure is a likely candidate for the structure of protonated HCl clusters in the gas phase and for the contact ion-pair formed following HCl dissociation in solution.

Synthesis of hydrochloric acid solution for total mercury determination in natural waters.
Total mercury (Hg(T)) determination requires the addition of concentrated hydrochloric acid solution (≥10 mol L(-1) HCl) in relatively high amounts to preserve the samples and to prepare reagent solutions. A method for the preparation of concentrated HCl with Hg(T) concentration of lower than 5 ng L(-1) is described in this article. It is based on the well-known chemical reaction: 2 NH(4)Cl + H...
متن کاملThe Combination of Gelatin with Hydrochloric Acid
1. Cooper's gelatin purified according to Northrop and Kunitz exhibited a minimum of osmotic pressure and a maximum of opacity at pH 5.05 +/-0.05. The pH of solutions of this gelatin in water was also close to this value. It is inferred that such gelatin is isoelectric at this pH and not at pH 4.70. 2. Hydrogen electrode measurements with KCl-agar junctions were made with concentrated solutions...
متن کاملPhase separation during freezing upon warming of aqueous solutions.
Using differential scanning calorimetry, we show that the addition of solute(s) to emulsified water lowers the freezing temperature to <231 K, the homogeneous nucleation temperature of pure bulk water, or even completely suppresses freezing. In the latter case, freezing upon warming occurs above T(X) ≈ 150 K and leads to a phase separation into pure ice and a freeze-concentrated solution (FCS) ...
متن کاملFractographic Aspects of Stress Corrosion Failure of Zircaloy 2 in CH3OH HCL Solutions
Fracture surface of Zircaloy-2 specimens tested under constant crosshead speed in CH3OH/0.4 Vol. %HCI solution with and without selenium (25 ppm) addition was studied. Using a combined process of deformation and annealing, coarse grained material was also obtained and examined. Two modes of stress corrosion crack propagation were observed: an intergranular zone caused by stress assisted anodic ...
متن کاملHigh-acidity determination in salt-containing acids by optical sensors. The scope of a dual-transducer approach and the Hammett acidity function.
A dual-transducer approach based on sol-gel optical sensors was recently reported to measure acid and salt concentrations, C(acid) and C(salt), in concentrated aqueous LiCl-HCl, CaCl2-HCl, and AlCl3-HCl solutions (C(acid) at 5-6 M; C(salt) < or = 2 M). The scope of this new approach has been studied in salt-containing HCl solutions with C(acid) at 2-9 M, and factors that influence sensor respon...
